Its like seeing that first robin in the winter...a sure sign that spring is coming!
Its NFL Draft Time...and that means its almost football season!
Here's the Football Dude's Mock Draft!
The 2013 NFL draft is here and this is one of the most unpredictable years we have ever had. This is not a sexy class that has the star potential of years past. This class has solid players that can contribute and help teams but the talent in rounds 2 and 3 isn’t that much different from a lot of the players in the first round. Last year there were 19 trades in the first round and more than likely there will be just as many. Starting with the Texans at #27 the frenzy of trades will be all over the place as the teams jostle to get the player that they feel helps them get to the super bowl.
The broncos are in a great situation with the #28 pick. My guess after listening to John Elway is that they are going to trade out of the first round and receive more picks that make the broncos stronger. With this not being the best draft their division rivals are in tough situations that bolsters the Broncos chances of winning their third straight AFC west championship even more.
#1 Chiefs Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M. Congratulations to the Kansas City chiefs on winning two games last year and earning the #1 overall pick. Unfortunately for them this isn’t the best year to hold that honor. With no Andrew Luck or Peyton Manning type of QB’s in this draft the chiefs have to go with the best and safest overall player. Joeckel should be a very solid player for them but the underachieving team from K.C. still hasn’t addressed their biggest need on the team at Q.B. There is a lot of debate that they might take Erick Fisher, but Joeckel has proven himself against NFL talent in the SEC and Big 12.
#2 Jaguars Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida. This kid has all the tools at 6’3 315lb to be successful. A lot of people feel that the Jags will go for a DE but last year they drafted one in the second round and picked up Jason Babin. With Floyd teamed up with Tyson Alualu inside it could make for a much improved D-line that was one of the worst in the NFL last year.
#3 Raiders Trade. Everyone and their mother expected the raiders to take Floyd here, but he’s gone. This team is in such a mess they need the picks badly. After the draft the raiders will be on the clock for next year, as they will have the #1 pick. They can’t wait until next year when Roger Godell goes to the podium and says “With the #1 selection of the 2014 NFL draft the Oakland raiders select South Carolina’s DE Jadeveon Clowney. Poor Dennis Allen, it’s like one of those nights you go out with your buds and you meet this girl who your friends don’t warn you about. Instead they think it will be funny. Well shame on you John Fox for letting coach Allen go home with Oakland.
So with the #3 pick the Cardinals Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan. This is the worst O-line in the NFL vs. the best division in the NFL. Not a good match up for the cardinals. They made the move to bring in Carson Palmer and he’s a pocket QB so he needs some time to throw the ball. Fisher will be a big help with this poor OL
#4 Eagles Lane Johnson OL Oklahoma. With this supposed amazing new offense they have to help the QB, whoever it ends up being, they have to fix this OL. This team will go through a major overhaul as they have to get younger and they are changing to a 3-4 on D. This new offense will do well for a couple of weeks but the NFL seasons are much longer and tougher then playing in the Pac 12. Don’t be surprised if the Eagles trade out of this spot or if they trade Michel Vick on draft day.
#5 Lions trade pick to Falcons and they pick Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama By far the best DB in the draft. The falcons have done this before with Julio Jones. After losing two of their top CB’s the falcons make a bold move and grab him before the browns can
#6 Browns Geno Smith, West Virginia. New head coach that had Cam Newton, new OC had Phillip Rivers, and new GM does not like last year’s first round QB Brandon Weedon. With Dee Milliner gone the browns take Smith before Buffalo can. I think the browns will move down and still get Smith just don’t know where.
#7 Raiders select Sheldon Richardson, DT Missouri. Solid pick and the raiders look to rebuild. They lost their starting DT’s and Richardson is a player ready to start.
#8 Bills Chance Warmack, G Alabama. After losing one of the best guards in the NFL the bills try to fill that hole through the draft. Warmack builds a strong OL that should lean on one of the top 1-2 rb tandems in the NFL. They will find their QB later.
#9 Jets Dion Jordan, OLB Oregon. This is an athlete that can rush the passer. Something the jets desperately need. They have been building a strong DL the past few years and Jordan falls to them much to their surprise.
#10 Titans Trade to the Cowboys and select Jonathan Cooper, OG, North Carolina. The boys had to get ahead of the chargers and dolphins. Dallas has future defensive needs but Jerry Jones trades up eight spots to grab the future of his OL.
#11 Chargers trade. New GM is looking to build through the draft and with a lot of good OL in this draft they can trade down and pick up players they need to rebuild that OL.
So the Patriots move up and select Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia. He’s a little guy that can do a ton for you. The pats had a horrible off-season when it come to WR and need to bring in a dynamic player. Well they did that with Austin
#12 Dolphins. Miami select Ezekiel Ansah, DE BYU. They could go a lot of ways with this pick but I think they will trade their second round pick for chiefs LT Brandon Albert. Ansah is a little over rated I think but most teams have him high on their board and might be the top player available for Miami.
#13 Jets via trade for Darrel Revis to Tampa. There you go jets get rid of your best player. We would also like to wish Rex Ryan good luck in his final season as head coach of the Jets.
With their selection the J E T S take Keenan Allen, WR Cal. They need playmakers and Allen helps out a group that has struggled.
#14 Panthers select Xavier Rhodes, CB Florida State. Have you seen who the receivers are in their division? The panthers have to upgrade this position to have a chance. Very aggressive player that will have his hands full every divisional game.
#15 Trade Saints to the 49er’s. The 49er’s have a ton of picks this year and can’t even afford to pay all the rookies at this point so either they can trade or cut people. They could be moving around all weekend.
49er’s select Kenny Vaccaro, S, Texas. They had to jump in front of St. Louis for this selection. They lost one of the best safeties in the NFL to free agency and this teams only weak point is the secondary. This helps a ton getting Vaccaro.
#16 Rams select D.J. Fluker, OL, Alabama. There are other players the rams would of loved but selecting Flucker gives them a monster a right tackle.
#17 Steelers select Star Lotulelei, Utah. Great athlete that has fallen into the Steelers lap. Their D-line is getting older and they need to upgrade a lot of spots but can’t pass on Lotulelei.
#18 Titans select Sylvester Williams, DT North Carolina. Titans move back and still get their guy. They really need a wide body down in the trenches. They can still address some of their O-Line needs later in the draft.
#19 Giants select Menelik Watson, OT, Florida State. If a top pass rusher doesn’t fall to them they pick up great tackle at this spot.
#20 Bears select Alec Ogletree, LB, Georgia. An offensive minded new coach would love some more toys to play with and even though the bears have signed a couple of good LB’s Ogletree is a player that can step in on defense and make plays for them. They probably should pick a OL here but Ogletree is the right fit.
#21 Bengals select Eddie Lacy, RB, Alabama. Cincinnati needs a back that can catch the ball and do things that Ben Javis Green can’t. After seeing what Trent Richardson did last year the Bengals draft the next back to come out of Alabama. This is a spot where the Bengals could draft the best player on their board.
#22 Rams select Matt Elam, S Florida. St. Louis misses out again on a player they needed in Lacy. With Reid they help out a secondary with an impact player that they need back there.
#23 Vikings select D.J. Hayden,CB Houston. In the pass happy NFC south the Vikings need to address their secondary. Hayden has been sky rocketing on draft boards but he should help with the loss of their top corner Antone Winfield.
#24 Colts select Barkevious Mingo, LSU. Does Mingo really drop this far? I think so. Great athlete that is tall and lean. We’ll see how he does against the physicality of NFL lineman
#25 Vikings select Manti Te'o, LB Notre Dame. Despite all the Te’o mess he’s still a good football player. The Vikings need a good middle linebacker and once he gets better footwork he has the chance to be a solid starter.
#26 Packers trade to Buffalo. Bills select Ryan Nassib, QB Syracuse. Buffalo needs a QB and Nassib Comes with his former head coach to lead Buffalo’s offense. Don’t think he is first round worthy but make the move before another team beats them to him.
#27 Texans select Justin Hunter, WR, Tennessee The Texans have said they need someone opposite of Andre Johnson and Hopkins is a great pick here. Having said that, they will probably go in a different direction. They will probably move down and take a DB with this spot. Last year in the games they lost the QB’s torched them.
#28 Broncos select Tank Carradine, DE Florida State. This would be a solid pick for Denver. BUT, I don’t know if the value is here to pick any of the positions they need. Carradine helps with the loss of Elvis but with so many free agent DE’s they don’t have to reach here. There aren’t any DB’s left to pick at this spot or RB’s. If another team calls and wants to trade back into the first round the broncos can continue to build a strong team the next two rounds with the extra picks.
#29 Trade from Patriots. Chargers select Justin Pugh, OT Syracuse. San Diego must rebuild their oline and it starts with Pugh. Could be a draft that the chargers spend a few picks on lineman
#30 Trade from Falcons. Detroit selects Damontre Moore, DE Texas A&M. Good end that helps a team that lost its two starting ends.
#31 Trade from 49er’s. Saints select Jarvis Jones, OLB Georgia. The saints new DC Rob Ryan doesn’t have a rush OLB. Jones goes here but there might be someone else they better then Jones. Talented athlete with first round talent but a few red flags
#32 Ravens selects Kevin Minter, LB LSU. Really productive player that can step in and start for a ravens team that’s going to look different from a few months ago.
